Vidhi's Success Story

Name of the child : Vidhi Sachin Sawant
Date of Birth : 12th September 2017
Date of Admission : 22nd October 2018
Diagnosis : Global Developmental Delay
The Care-giver team at the Center examined Vidhi, and concluded that motor, cognitive, social, communication and self-care development needed to be addressed.
The psychologist counseled Vidhi’s parents.
The Occupational Therapist used different approaches including therapeutic exercises clubbed with playful activities, to achieve gross motor skills like walking. Core muscle groups were activated through various functional activities in antigravity postures. Use of sensory stimulation was done to improve body awareness.
The Special Educator used multisensory approach to help Vidhi improve muscular coordination, cognition and perceptual skills. Different activities using play way method were used to improve grasp pattern and hand function skills. Group sessions were organized to help Vidhi improve social skills of greeting others, sharing toys and reciprocity.

Faiz's Success Story

Name of the child : Faiz Husain Sheikh
Date of Birth : 29th April 2014
Date of Admission : 15th March 2017
Diagnosis : Cerebral Palsy
Faiz’s condition was diagnosed as Cerebral Palsy. The assessment identified the following problem areas:
• Gross motor Skills- unable to stand without support, unable to walk, poor trunk control and balance
• Fine motor skills- do not hold small objects in palm, poor grasp pattern
• Speech and language – not developed
• Cognitive and perceptual skills were poor
• Self-help skills – Dependent
Having set therapy goals, the Occupational Therapist used multisensory input approach to help Faiz improve in the areas identified. Different activities were done to facilitate grasp pattern such as transfer of objects in container, putting small pegs in respective holes to improve depth perception and eye hand coordination. Activities using two hands together like ball catching and throwing were done to improve bilateral use of hands. For improving cognitive and perceptual skill activities such as discriminating and matching objects based on color, shape and size was being done. Group therapy was organized to improve social skills. The Occupational Therapist used Neurodevelopmental therapy Approach and Cognitive perceptual Approach to effect an improvement. Proprioceptive stimulations were given to improve muscle tone on therapy ball. Faiz’s core muscles groups were activated through various functional activities in antigravity postures. Gait training was given to him with support of orthotics and mobility device.
The Center arranged light weight orthotics for Faiz free of cost.
Care-giver staff visited Faiz’s home to understand conditions there and customize therapy. His parents were counseled; his mother was trained to follow up therapy at home.
The Speech therapist helped Faiz to improve communication and language skills.
At 5 years today Faiz has shown good improvement in his areas of concern. He has started maintaining balance while standing with the support of wall for a count of 50 under observation of a therapist. He tries to cruize along the wall and pushes the rollator to walk forward under supervision. His cognitive skills have also improved considerably- he recognizes colors, identifies animals, vehicles and shapes. Faiz speaks numbers 1 to 10 and recognizes alphabets. Faiz speaks his name when asked. He speaks bisyllabic words and tries to make simple sentences with 3 words. He greets by joining his hands together, saying a ‘Hello’ and waves Bye-Bye, while leaving. Faiz even helps his mother in dressing or undressing himself, eats dry food like wafers, bread, chakli and drinks water from glass by himself. His cousins who stay in the neighborhood, come to his house regularly to play with him. Indeed, Faiz has made considerable progress and is continuing therapy happily.

Roshankumar's Success Story

Name of the child : Roshankumar Prajapati
Date of Birth : 19th November 2012
Date of Admission : 4th July 2017
Diagnosis : Cerebral Palsy
Roshankumar’s condition was diagnosed as Cerebral Palsy. The Occupational Therapist’s and Special Educator’s assessment identified areas relating to motor, cognitive, social, communication and self -care development that needed to be addressed by E.I. therapy.
The Occupational Therapist used different approaches including therapeutic exercises clubbed with playful activities, encouraging transitional movements such as rolling, sitting and standing.
With the help of another NGO, Roshankumar was provided light weight orthoses to prevent and correct deformities in the limb and assist mobility, free of cost.
The Special Educator used multisensory input approach to help Roshan improve in different areas. A wide range of intervention were used to improve eye hand coordination, cognition and perception of depth. Different activities to improve grasp pattern along with facilitation of bilateral use of hands were also carried out.
The Speech Therapist worked on improving his speech muscles with specialized exercises.
Today, after one and a half years of therapy, Roshan can focus attention and remember things he has learnt better. He can identify colors and match similar shaped objects in a puzzle. His hand-functions have also improved- he can scribble with grasp-crayons, albeit with support. Roshan even wipes his face by himself to clear saliva dripping from the drooling. He has improved trunk control and maintain good siting balance and can maintain an upright balance for a longer duration. He waves Bye-bye and greets everyone with a Namaste (putting both hands together).
Today, as Roshan plays with his brother and sister, dancing to music at home, his mother is very happy with the progress, and has promised to continue therapy until he is ready for the next step in rehabilitation !

Vidhi's Success Story

Name of the child : Vidhi Shelar
Date of Birth : 24th July 2016
Date of Admission : 15th January 2019
Diagnosis : Diplegic Cerebral Palsy
The Care-giver Team diagnosed her with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy. At the AWMH E I R P Center, the team devised a personalized therapy plan and set about bringing the transformation.
Vidhi’s parents were counseled by the psychologist. Over several sessions, both Sharmila and Vinod began accepting the situation unconditionally, and looked to provide the necessary support to Vidhi.
The Occupational Therapist gave neuro-developmental stimulation along with different play activities to improve Vidhi’s posture and balance. This also helped her cross vital developmental milestones. Functional activities done in antigravity postures helped strengthen core muscles. The Occupational Therapist used the therapy ball to give proprioceptive and vestibular exercises that enhanced Vidhi’s body tone and helped restore balance.
The Special Educator involved her in group sessions to improve her social skills. Activities included sharing of toys amongst other things, to encourage reciprocity. In addition she gave her activities such as transferring objects, tower-making with blocks and cylindrical pegs to facilitate eye-hand coordination. She worked on Vidhi’s ability to understand, with activities that involved identifying and distinguishing different objects based on color, shape and size. By giving different sensory stimulations to left side of her body, the improved her sense of awareness of her left side.
The Speech Therapist worked on strengthening her speech muscles.
Just 6 months into therapy, Vidhi has started understanding simple commands, expressing her needs through gestures, and sometimes speaks in words like “de, ghe, aai, baba” (translated as give, take, mummy, daddy in Marathi). She now walks with minimum support of the therapist and sits with crossed legs, maintaining a good balance of her upper body, for a considerable period! Vidhi uses both hands to hold large objects. When playing with a ball, she reaches out in different directions including overhead, indicating a good control of proximal muscles of her shoulder and elbow.
Vidhi’s communication skills have also improved considerably, as she expresses her needs through gesture. She speaks monosyllabic words. Vidhi loves to play with other children during group sessions, many a time initiating play during parallel play. “Its fun to see Vidhi play with the neighborhood children together, which I longed see for first few years of her life”, says a beaming Sharmila!
Vidhi is continuing therapy at the AWMH E I Center......
