Early Intervention Services are special services for infants and toddlers at risk of developmental delays. These services are designed to identify and meet children’s needs in five developmental areas. These are physical, cognitive, communication, social or emotional development, sensory and adaptive development.
AWMH Maharashtra was the first Non-Government Organization - the first Parents Association in India to start this kind of programme. AWMH runs one of India's biggest Early Intervention and Research Projects, with 5 EIRP Clinics located all over Mumbai City & suburbs.
Each year, these clinics cater to hundreds of children with neuro-developmental delay, including those with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disability in the age group 0-6 years who come mostly from the Socio-Economically Backward Class of Society.
Early intervention includes provision of services to such children and their families for the purpose of lessening the effects of the condition. Early intervention can be remedial or preventive in nature—remediating the existing developmental problems or preventing their occurrence
EIRP Clinics provide Counseling, Therapy and Pre-School Stimulation free of cost, to all the infants and children in the age group of 0-6 years, irrespective of caste, creed, sex or religion. Infants and children are normally referred to AWMH-EIRP Centers by Neonatologists and Paediatricians.
At the Centers children are assessed by well-trained, qualified and experienced staff comprising Special Educators and Occupational Therapists. An individualized therapy designed to addreess the requirements of the child is then drawn up and administered. The child’s response to the therapy is monitored at regular intervals on established parameters, and therapy is modified if required.
Home-bound Programs
Parents are trained to follow-up with the therapy at home. Our team of Occupational Therapists and Special Educators visit the home of the child to know the social and economic condition and what type of therapeutic and development support the mother/ parent will be able to provide to the child. Existing support elements in the form of pro-active neighbours, etc are assessed and trained to follow-through with the therapy during the time the child is at home.
Trans-disciplinary approach
AWMH practices trans-disciplinary approach in providing early intervention services. Therefore all resources in the center are cross trained in Early Intervention care. Any resource can provide any type of services, once the diagnosis and therapeutic plan has been developed by the specialist.
